Chancellor Rachel Reeves has signaled further welfare cuts and possible tax increases ahead of a second autumn Budget. Institute for Fiscal Studies analysis estimates the Treasury requires at least £22bn to address weak economic growth. The chancellor stated welfare cannot remain untouched and reforms must be made properly. The government previously dropped £4bn of proposed disability benefit cuts after parliamentary opposition, and some Universal Credit changes will begin in April but are unlikely to produce major savings.
