Thousands of British military personnel dismissed for their homosexuality will now receive compensation, acknowledging the trauma caused by a ban that lasted from 1967 to 2000.
Defence Secretary John Healey referred to the historic treatment of LGBT veterans as a "moral stain on our nation" and highlighted the government's commitment to rectify past injustices.
Those dismissed due to their sexuality will be eligible for initial payments of £50,000, with additional funds based on the severity of their treatment, up to £20,000.
The new compensation scheme reflects Labour's intention to address grievances and enhance support for LGBT veterans, acknowledging a previously unrecorded history of discrimination.
