The UK's nuclear industry faces a significant challenge with Sellafield Ltd pausing its Replacement Analytical Project (RAP) due to extensive delays and escalating costs, which have risen to £1.5 billion. With a deadline set for 2028 to develop facilities for plutonium waste treatment, Sellafield plans to refurbish its existing 70-year-old lab and utilize an adjacent facility instead. This approach, while meeting waste processing needs, raises concerns about inadequate support for the broader nuclear sector that RAP was designed to enhance, as noted by the National Audit Office's critiques of the current laboratory's conditions.
While the alternative plan can accommodate Sellafield's waste processing requirements, questions remain over support for the remainder of the UK's nuclear industry, which RAP was intended to provide.
Euan Hutton, CEO of Sellafield Ltd, said he was 'confident' in an alternative that involves refurbishing its old lab and borrowing facilities from another onsite lab.
