Between 2020 and 2023, direct UK aid for health-related projects in red list countries fell by nearly 63%, from 484m to 181m. This significant reduction in funding has severe implications for the most vulnerable healthcare systems. With workforce shortages escalating due to the loss of aid and the concurrent recruitment of their nurses, these countries are in dire straits. The UK is not only diminishing support but also exacerbating existing crises in these fragile health systems.
Prof Nicola Ranger remarked, 'Cuts to aid may have been the previous government's idea, but it is now this government's duty to fix it. By maintaining the aid target at a lowly 0.5% of GNI, the UK is failing to uphold its international duties.' This statement underscores the urgent need for a policy reversal to restore necessary aid budgets, which are critical for stabilizing healthcare in the most affected nations.
