Former Prime Minister Theresa May emphasized the need for consumers to reflect on the origins of cheap clothing purchases, highlighting modern slavery as a pressing human rights issue. While some companies are taking steps to ensure their supply chains are free from slave labor, many consumers remain unaware of where their clothes come from. May's Global Commission on Modern Slavery Human has published a report estimating 50 million people trapped in slavery, urging collaboration among governments, businesses, and the public to eradicate this practice and promote ethical fashion consumption.
"When there is a cost of living crisis you look for that cheap fashion, you don't ask where it comes from. How many of us actually ask where our clothes are made?"
"Modern slavery is the greatest human rights issue of our time, but also destabilises economies. Forced labour creates volatility in supply chains and distorts competition."
