Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael's coalition government is struggling, facing criticism for aligning with rural party leader Michael Lowry instead of collaborating with center-left parties, which could better address voter concerns. A recent poll revealed 59% of respondents blame the government for ongoing issues, notably the rising homelessness rates. The parliamentary environment has become increasingly hostile, with opposition parties feeling disrespected. The appointment of Verona Murphy as Ceann Comhairle has also raised eyebrows due to her perceived lack of qualifications and authority, escalating tensions and distractions from urgent governmental work.
In the most recent Sunday Independent/Ireland Thinks poll earlier this month, 59pc of respondents blamed the Government for the stand-off.
Neither side in the chamber has come out with its reputation enhanced, but the mess was created by that ill-judged Faustian bargain with Lowry.
The Dáil has more urgent things to be doing with its time than arguing about who gets to speak, when and for how long.
It is patently absurd to treat TDs who have pledged loyally to keep the Coalition in power as if they were non-aligned free-thinkers.
