The 1.7 billion extension of the DLR is officially happening
"'I'm really pleased that the government is backing the DLR extension to Thamesmead - something I've long called for alongside London's businesses and communities. The project is a win-win and a massive vote of confidence in London.'"
"'This Budget will choose growth over austerity by supporting renewal in every part of the country. Extending the DLR to Thamesmead will deliver much-needed new homes, new jobs, and quicker commutes - the building blocks for boosting growth, putting more pounds in pockets.'"
The DLR is set to be extended from Beckton to Thamesmead, with formal approval expected in the government's upcoming Budget. The project was first mooted over a decade ago and formally proposed five years ago. The extension will branch off at Gallions Reach and serve an area currently without rail or tube access, where residents rely on buses to Abbey Wood or Woolwich. Officials say the upgrade could unlock up to 25,000 homes and 10,000 jobs and will be one of the largest London transport upgrades alongside Old Oak Common. The move may delay the Bakerloo extension and West London Orbital.
