Swinney sets out latest plan for an independence referendum
"come together and demand a say over our future"
"utterly chilling"
"That seems like a generation to me."
"I think what we have to do to break the logjam is to repeat what we achieved in 2011 and make sure the UK government has no answer to escaping from the precedent that was established in 2011."
John Swinney called for the UK government to accept a referendum on Scottish independence if a majority of SNP MSPs are elected at next year's Holyrood election. Scots were urged to come together and demand a say over their future. The Scottish government published a constitutional paper while the UK government said independence is not a priority. Westminster politicians, including Sir Keir Starmer, were accused of using "utterly chilling" language about immigrants. The prime minister was asked to apologise for claiming he had failed to welcome a 10bn shipbuilding deal that will secure thousands of jobs on the Clyde. A 2011 precedent and one million young voters by 2030 were cited to press for a repeat mandate, and Constitution Secretary Angus Robertson suggested a pro-independence majority from any party would represent a mandate and expressed hope for an SNP majority.
