This is the lowest level of support recorded since the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) began tracking public opinion some 40 years ago."
Public backing for the British monarchy declined to 51% in 2024, the lowest recorded since tracking began in the early 1980s. Support dropped from 86% in 1983, while the share saying the monarchy is unimportant rose to about 31% last year from roughly 10% in 1983. Around 15% now support abolishing the monarchy. The dip in support is reported ahead of a state visit by US President Donald Trump, when the King will host a ceremonial welcome and state banquet at Windsor Castle from September 17–19 for a second, unprecedented US presidential state visit.
