Wes Streeting indicated that the government will change the grant to ensure hospices are protected against rising National Insurance contributions and staffing costs.
Hospices currently face a potential deficit of around £60 million for the 2023-24 financial year, largely attributed to increased staffing costs and rising employer National Insurance contributions.
Streeting acknowledged the financial challenges faced by hospices, including the fact that a fifth of UK hospices have had to cut services despite increasing demand for care.
The hospice sector, relying primarily on charitable contributions for funding, is facing its worst financial year to date, which poses a significant risk to service provision.
