Opposition parties have criticized the government for inflating housing completion figures ahead of the elections. While leaders suggested completions would reach 40,000, the actual figure fell below 31,000. Contention arose from a letter by former Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien, contradicting independent reports from the ESRI and Central Bank. Recent disclosures indicate that Minister Chambers received a report indicating the targets were unrealistic. Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty claims this suggests deliberate deception by the government to mislead the public regarding housing projections before the elections.
It has come to light that the minister received a report from his economic division which made it very clear that the 40,000 target was not achievable.
Mr. Doherty has accused the minister of deliberately misleading the public ahead of the election.
The figures to-date are broadly in line with recent revisions to completions forecasts from the Central Bank for 2024.
Despite the report from department experts, Minister Chambers claimed to the media that Ireland would see close to 40,000 home completions.
