The Irish government proposes a new mechanism allowing for more significant troop deployment overseas, increasing the cap from 12 to 50 personnel. This initiative aims to enable Ireland to pursue an independent foreign policy without external veto from UN Security Council permanent members. The draft proposals will also facilitate greater defense support for Irish citizens abroad and enhance security operations at embassies. A pre-legislative scrutiny process will follow to assess these changes. The Tániste emphasized Ireland’s proud legacy in international peacekeeping missions dating back to 1958.
Under the draft proposals, the number of Defence Force personnel that can be in peace support will also rise from 12 to 50.
The proposals for a new double-lock, consisting of only Cabinet and Dáil approval, will now be introduced to the wider chamber.
