Mr. Harris, speaking on RTÉ's Late Late Show, stressed the urgency for legislative action on the Occupied Territories Bill, aimed at banning trade with illegal Israeli settlements. He confirmed discussions with officials about the bill post-election, assuring that the government aims to fulfill its commitments in this regard. While he does not believe arms are flown through Irish airspace, he acknowledged a need for greater international coordination to clarify what is transported through Irish skies, highlighting challenges due to aircraft operating at high altitudes.
Mr. Harris emphasized the need for robust legislation regarding the Occupied Territories, stating, "I will fulfil the commitment of the programme for government to bring forward legislation in relation to the occupied territories, we have to do everything humanly possible here, use every lever at our disposal."
He acknowledged the importance of international cooperation, noting, "I think we obviously need to see if there's more that needs to be done in relation to that," emphasizing the limitations of Ireland's oversight over aircraft flying at high altitudes.
