The Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy (JCNSS) has urged the Housing and Planning Secretary to reject plans for a large Chinese embassy in London, warning of threats to UK security and economic resilience. Both the Metropolitan Police and Tower Hamlets Council have raised objections to the project. Committee chair Matt Western warned the location presents "eavesdropping risks in peacetime and sabotage risks in a crisis" because of its proximity to fibre-optic cables, data centres and telecom exchanges serving Canary Wharf and the City. Reports of basement rooms and tunnels and security-service warnings that the site could become a hub for "intelligence gathering and intimidation operations" have increased concerns.
