New research indicates that almost 50% of birch wood certified under sustainability schemes, such as FSC and PEFC, is misidentified as originating from specific countries. Conducted by World Forest ID, which includes Kew Gardens, this study tested verified sourcing claims for birch used in furniture and musical instruments. The analysis particularly highlights concerns regarding sanctioned Russian and Belarusian timber potentially infiltrating the UK market, raising alarms about enforcement of timber import bans following geopolitical tensions, notably the invasion of Ukraine.
The new research by World Forest ID reveals that nearly half of birch wood certified as sustainably sourced is misidentified, raising concerns about illegal timber imports.
As sanctions against Russian and Belarusian timber products are in place, the findings suggest significant quantities may still be entering markets like Britain.
