Residents fight for speed humps to be put back
"I bring my kids home and people are bombing it up there at 50mph. You almost wish they hadn't resurfaced it and left it with potholes because then people would have driven slower. Now you've just given them a nice, smooth surface to go up and down there."
"Claims by one of the organisers of the petition that cars are going at 60mph in Hawes Lane are fanciful, he said. As one of the local councillors for West Wickham, I have carefully monitored the road myself and at the local Safer Neighbourhood Panel request, the police carried out speed checks, and no vehicles were exceeding the speed limit."
Residents on Hawes Lane in West Wickham launched a campaign to reinstate speed humps after resurfacing removed them, claiming the smooth surface has encouraged speeding. Some residents reported drivers reaching about 50mph and identified sharp bends at The Mead and Links Road as particular hazards. More than 600 people signed a petition titled Make Hawes Lane Safe Again calling for traffic-calming measures. Bromley Council said avoiding reinstalling humps saved taxpayers money and contended claims of very high speeds were fanciful. A local councillor said he monitored the road and that police speed checks found no vehicles exceeding the limit.
