Residents fight against huge 3 billion housing scheme next to Notting Hill
"A collection of stakeholders including residents and a local councillor have written to the Mayor about their concerns, from affordable housing numbers to the impacts on heritage. The Canal Way development, also known as Kensal Canalside which was jointly filed by developer Ballymore and Sainsbury's, is intended to transform the former gasworks site at the northern end of Ladbroke Grove."
"Due to the size of the scheme, which as well as the homes includes amenities such as cafes and office space, it is set to be referred to Mr Khan. He can then either let the council's decision stand, refuse it or call it in for further review. A spokesperson for Ballymore said the works will turn the site into a thriving place full of character that will not only support the development's residents but thousands in the wider community."
Campaigners have urged London Mayor Sadiq Khan to intervene to halt plans to build 2,500 homes in Kensington and Chelsea over concerns about affordable housing, heritage and transport. The Canal Way/Kensal Canalside scheme by Ballymore and Sainsbury's would redevelop a disused gasworks at northern Ladbroke Grove and provide homes alongside offices, healthcare, a nursery, leisure and a public park. Planning documents list 2,519 homes with 500 affordable (342 social rent, 158 intermediate). The proposals would demolish existing retail, community facilities and 16 social homes. The application attracted over 1,800 objections and 1,673 letters of support; opponents cite poor transport links and towers up to 29 storeys.
