"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground."
"Rachel Reeves has been handed a rare boost ahead of next month's Budget after the Office for National Statistics (ONS) announced that government borrowing had been overstated by a cumulative 3bn due to mistakes in recent public finances data. Since January, public borrowing estimates have been out by around 200m-500m a month, the ONS said, handing the chancellor some extra breathing space in her upcoming Budget."
An Office for National Statistics adjustment revealed government borrowing had been overstated by a cumulative 3bn because of incorrect VAT receipts data supplied by HMRC. Monthly public borrowing estimates since January were overstated by roughly 200m–500m, reducing borrowing for the year to March 2025 by about 1bn and lowering borrowing from April to August by around 2bn. The revision gives Chancellor Rachel Reeves some extra fiscal breathing space ahead of next month's Budget. Reeves still needs to identify 20–40bn in savings to close the fiscal shortfall. ONS credited HMRC for timely communication that enabled correction of the records.
