To commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, pubs in England and Wales will remain open until 01:00 BST on May 8, 2024. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasized that this extension allows the public to honor those who served during the war. The hospitality industry has welcomed this decision, noting it provides essential support during challenging times. The Home Office will seek Parliamentary approval for this measure, which aligns with previous extensions during major events, underlining the importance of shared celebrations and remembering history.
"Keeping our pubs open for longer will give people the opportunity to join in celebrations and raise a glass to all of the men and women who served their country, both overseas and at home," Sir Keir said.
"At such a challenging time for the hospitality sector, allowing businesses to extend their trading hours during these celebrations offers a much-needed boost while paying tribute to our shared history," Michael Kill stated.
"Pubs are the nation's second home and the perfect place for communities to gather and raise a glass to all of those who made huge sacrifices for our freedom," expressed Emma McClarkin.
