A proposed amendment to the crime and policing bill in England and Wales seeks to decriminalize abortion, allowing women to terminate a pregnancy without the threat of prosecution. Currently, abortion laws are enforced under a historic Victorian law, leading to increased police investigations into women's actions regarding their pregnancies. This amendment, introduced by MP Tonia Antoniazzi, aims to protect women and keep existing healthcare regulations intact, enabling abortion under current conditions without criminal implications.
The police cannot be trusted with abortion law nor can the CPS or the wider criminal justice system. My amendment to the crime and policing bill will give us the urgent change we need to protect women.
Women would no longer be prosecuted for terminating a pregnancy in England and Wales under a proposed shake-up of abortion laws, aiming to address increasing police investigations.
