The Welsh Parliament (Senedd) is considering allowing voters to remove members who violate behavior rules through a referendum-like process. Unlike Westminster's by-elections, the replacement politician would come from the same party. Chair of the standards committee, Hannah Blythyn, emphasizes accountability for politicians. Critics, however, argue that voters would lose the power to choose a replacement directly. Currently, Senedd members can only be suspended for misconduct, as seen in Rhys ab Owen's case. The proposals are aimed for legal establishment by the Welsh government before the 2026 elections.
Politicians must act with decency and integrity and if they fail to do so, they should be accountable to the public for their actions.
Currently, if Senedd members are found to have broken the code of conduct on behaviour they can be suspended for a period of time.
