Ministers criticise two-tier' sentencing changes in England and Wales
Briefly

Ministers have condemned new guidelines from the Sentencing Council that could lead to sentencing disparity based on ethnic background. The proposed changes emphasize the importance of pre-sentence reports and affect how judges assess cases involving ethnic minorities, young adults, abuse survivors, and pregnant women. Critics, including government ministers, argue this undermines fairness in the justice system, with calls to rethink guidance as it risks establishing a two-tier system that could exacerbate existing biases against minority communities in sentencing and imprisonment rates.
I think it's really important in the country that people are trusting in the justice system that we have, and that means you can't have a two-tier system.
As someone who is from an ethnic minority background myself, I do not stand for any differential treatment before the law, for anyone of any kind.
