"speaks to how deep the corruption goes in our systems"
"highly unlikely"
"perhaps as a gay man"
"And retrospectively, if we had known the information that we know now, it is highly unlikely that he would have been appointed because what we know now is materially different to what we understood at the time."
Virginia Giuffre's family criticized the appointment of Lord Mandelson as UK ambassador to the United States, calling it evidence of deep systemic corruption. Lord Mandelson was removed after emails showed he sent supportive messages to Jeffrey Epstein as Epstein faced jail for sex offences in 2008. Lord Mandelson denied meeting Giuffre and said that, perhaps as a gay man, he never sought or was offered introductions to women from Epstein. Business Secretary Peter Kyle said some information was known during vetting and that the UK needed exceptional talent at the time, but that knowledge now would likely have prevented the appointment. Giuffre alleged she was abused by Epstein after meeting Ghislaine Maxwell in 2000.
