A 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage after defacing the Winston Churchill statue outside Parliament with red paint graffiti. The vandalism included phrases such as 'Zionist war criminal,' 'stop the genocide,' and 'free Palestine.' Police arrived within two minutes of the incident occurring at 4am on Friday, 27 February. The statue, a 3.6-metre bronze sculpture unveiled in 1973, has been vandalized multiple times previously, including during 2020 Black Lives Matter protests and Extinction Rebellion demonstrations. The Metropolitan Police and Greater Manchester Police have intensified enforcement against protest-related slogans following terror attacks in October.
