Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood has indicated a "moment of reckoning" for those who ignored the grooming gang abuse scandal. Despite the extensive findings of the 2022 IICSA report, the government has yet to implement key recommendations. An audit by Baroness Casey is concluding, and calls for a national inquiry have been met with resistance. Mahmood pointed out that, although many offenders are imprisoned, victims feel justice remains elusive due to ongoing systemic failures that need addressing for true accountability.
Mahmood emphasized a need for accountability, stating, "On one level you could say, well, accountability is occurring because these criminals are facing the full force of the law, but the way that this scandal has played out shows systemic failure."
The Justice Secretary acknowledged the ongoing lack of justice for many victims due to unresolved failures, saying, "many victims still don't feel they have seen justice because failures by the authorities have yet to be addressed."
