Twelve Labour councillors have been suspended from the party due to their membership in a problematic WhatsApp group called 'Trigger Me Timbers.' This follows the earlier suspension of MPs Andrew Gwynne and Oliver Ryan after leaked messages revealed racist and misogynistic comments. Gwynne, a former health minister, faced backlash for particularly offensive messages targeting constituents, while Ryan acknowledged his failure to object to the unacceptable behavior in the group. The scandal has prompted significant concerns regarding conduct within the Labour party, affecting several local councils in Greater Manchester.
Andrew Gwynne, the MP for Gorton and Denton in Greater Manchester, described a constituent as an illiterate retard and referred to the public as arseholes.
Reflecting on his involvement, Gwynne stated, 'while very sad to have been suspended, will support Labour and the prime minister in any way I can.'
Oliver Ryan expressed regret for not speaking out against the unacceptable comments made in the group, acknowledging his failure was wrong.
The controversial WhatsApp group, named 'Trigger Me Timbers,' has already seen the suspension of two MPs over leaked racist and sexist remarks.
