Labour councillor suspended over racist comment
"This idiot needs locking up, and if he's not British, then he needs deporting afterwards."
"I unreservedly apologise for my comment and deeply regret making it."
"In a time when racist attacks are on the rise across the city, I am disgusted to see councillor Breckels use his platform to spew this racist rhetoric."
"This kind of racist behaviour should have no place in Bristol, a proud and diverse city of sanctuary. On behalf of the entire Bristol Green Party, I am calling for councillor Breckels to resign immediately, or for Labour to remove this man from office."
A Bristol City councillor posted a racist comment on Facebook targeting an ethnic minority individual accused of stealing copper gas canisters, calling for detention and deportation. The post was deleted and the councillor, Fabian Breckels, apologised unreservedly and said he regretted the comment. Labour suspended the councillor immediately and referred his conduct to the party for a full investigation. Green councillor Lorraine Francis said the comment was disgusting, offensive to residents, and called for resignation, stating such racist behaviour has no place in Bristol and urging Labour to remove him from office. Residents expressed hurt.
