Kirsty Coventry has made history as the first female and first African president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Her election followed a surprising first-round victory over notable competitors, including Sebastian Coe. Coventry won 49 of 97 votes, demonstrating strong support within the IOC membership. In her victory speech, she expressed pride in her role as a groundbreaking leader, emphasizing her commitment to harnessing sport's power to unite and inspire. Despite a slow campaign start, her victory marks a significant milestone in sports leadership and promotes progress for women and representation in athletics.
I am particularly proud to be the first female IOC president, and also the first from Africa. I hope that this vote will be an inspiration to many people.
Sport has an unmatched power to unite, inspire and create opportunities for all, and I am committed to making sure we harness that power to its fullest.
Glass ceilings have been shattered today, and I am fully aware of my responsibilities as a role model.
