'It was a truly terrible time' - Dana says presidential campaign still feels like 'well of grief'
Briefly

The singer, who gained fame in 1970 after winning Eurovision, has a complex political history including two presidential runs and a stint in the European Parliament. Despite facing challenges, including her brother's legal issues during her 2011 campaign, she reflects on her advocacy for democracy and the plight of young families. During an interview, she expresses no regrets about her political actions, particularly in championing the need for Constitutional protections, and relates deeply to the struggles faced by independent candidates in politics.
I was the first independent that was ever nominated and one of the reasons I ran was because the presidency belongs to the people and yet, it was only the political parties who had the keys to the (Phoenix) Park and it was so undemocratic.
You have to really believe and want to do it as an independent. You know what I would love to see? I would love to see a young family in the Park because young families are being battered today, it's so hard for them, financial pressures and trying to keep up jobs and mortgages.
