Hillsborough Law to progress in next parliamentary session
"While we welcome the Government's tabling of the carry-over motion for the Hillsborough law, and a lot of people will be relieved today, they were extremely worried about what was happening."
"Ministers must end the delays and deliver the law in full without carve outs for the intelligence and security services, as promised, to achieve the cultural change that is needed."
The Hillsborough Law, aimed at ensuring public officials are accountable during inquiries, will continue to progress after being carried over to the next parliamentary session. Labour MP Ian Byrne, a survivor of the Hillsborough disaster, welcomed this commitment but urged the government to expedite the process. Concerns over proposed amendments that could exempt intelligence agencies from accountability led to backlash, resulting in the withdrawal of those amendments. The Labour Party plans to include the legislation in its 2024 manifesto.
