Government to rethink rejection of Waspi compensation
"Retaking this decision should not be taken as an indication that government will necessarily decide that it should award financial redress."
"I understand that people are impatient for this matter to be resolved,"
"It is important that we give it full and appropriate consideration."
"The government now knows it got it wrong and we are pleased they are now trying to do it properly. We hope they also try to do it quickly."
About 3.6 million women born in the 1950s were not properly informed that the state pension age was being raised to equalise with men. The government previously apologised for a 28-month delay in sending letters but rejected financial payouts. A 2007 survey that was not shown to the then Work and Pensions Secretary has since come to light, prompting a decision to be retaken. The current Pensions Secretary said retaking the decision does not guarantee compensation and that checks will be made for other missed documents. No timescale has been given. Campaigners and Waspi demand immediate compensation; the PHSO had recommended payments between £1,000 and £2,950 but cannot enforce them.
