Galloway won 12,335 votes - 39.7% of the total - in a much more sweeping victory than anyone had predicted, giving him a 5,697-vote majority. Labour, which abandoned its candidate, finished in fourth place with just 7.7%.
Addressing Starmer, Galloway proclaimed a new political era: 'This is going to spark a movement, a landslide, a shifting of the tectonic plates, a score of parliamentary constituencies.'
