Great British Energy's search for a chief executive faces significant hurdles as it prepares to recruit at its Aberdeen HQ. Almost six months after its formation, there are no clear frontrunners despite government initiatives to appoint an interim chief. Industry sources reveal challenges in attracting candidates willing to accept a civil servant's salary and relocate to Aberdeen. Experienced oil and gas executives may not be suitable for the clean energy focus, creating a smaller pool of potential candidates. Currently, former Siemens UK head Jurgen Maier leads the company alongside a non-executive director board from various UK locations.
The government was likely to struggle to find a permanent candidate with the industry credentials to take responsibility for billions of pounds in public spending.
There are many experienced energy executives already based in Aberdeen who have a strong track record in the oil and gas industry but they wouldn't necessarily be the best fit for the government's clean energy company.
Those who aren't in Aberdeen might not be willing or able to move there, complicating the recruitment process.
GB Energy is currently under the leadership of Jurgen Maier, who is based in Manchester, and a five-strong team of non-executive directors based across the UK.
