First Minister Eluned Morgan voiced strong criticism of UK benefits cuts amid a heated debate in the Senedd. Disputes arose after Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens claimed Morgan supported the reforms, which Morgan firmly denied, asserting she speaks for herself. Although expressing concern for those affected, Morgan refrained from outright condemnation of the cuts. The government’s delayed response to her request for an impact assessment further fueled tension, with calls for transparency and debate scheduled in the Senedd regarding the welfare changes.
In her strongest comments on the issue so far, Morgan said she lamented the reforms and that people were 'suffering' and 'worried'.
I had somebody else last week trying to speak for me. I speak for myself," Morgan asserted, referring to the Welsh Secretary's remarks regarding the welfare cuts.
The issue is set to return to the Senedd again on Wednesday, after a Plaid Cymru proposal for a debate was agreed to by Welsh Labour.
Morgan declined to condemn the cuts outright, coming under sustained criticism from the opposition during first minister's questions.
