Former mineworkers are dissatisfied with government delays concerning surplus payments from the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme (BCSSS). Chancellor Rachel Reeves had previously announced extra payments for Mineworkers' Pension Scheme members, but the BCSSS, which includes ex-miners, was overlooked. Chief Secretary Darren Jones noted more details would be shared later this year. Former miner Dave Drury voices frustration, emphasizing the urgency due to dying members, while Kim Smith asserts the money in these schemes belongs to the members, not taxpayers, raising concerns over accountability.
It's just somebody sat down with a pen who just needs to sign that off... They ain't got time to wait. It's six-a-day I think it works out at.
We were all fighting together, but I do think it's as simple as someone's looked down at a piece of paper and seen 'mineworkers' pensions' and they've added the word 'scheme' on the end.
It's not government money, it's not taxpayers' money, it's the scheme members' money and we'll like that money back.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced in last year's Budget members of the Mineworkers' Pension Scheme (MPS) would receive extra payments.
