Environmental rules reviewed for small housebuilders
Briefly

The UK government is planning to ease biodiversity rules affecting developers to facilitate housing construction on smaller sites. Under the proposed changes, builders may receive relief from biodiversity compensation requirements for minor developments, allowing more residential projects to proceed. This initiative aims to address the declining market share of small to medium-sized builders since the 1980s. Housing Secretary Angela Rayner emphasizes the need for a simpler, fairer system that empowers smaller builders. However, opposition voices criticize potential reductions in local council powers and express concerns over environmental impacts.
"For decades the status quo has failed them and it's time to level the playing field," Rayner said. "Today we're taking urgent action to make the system simpler, fairer and more cost effective, so smaller housebuilders can play a crucial role in our journey to get Britain building."
Ministers say they are considering how costs can be reduced for smaller housebuilders whilst also delivering habitats for wildlife. The proposals are part of a package of housing reforms to be set out by the Labour government on Wednesday.
