"You can't have an economy with nine million people on benefits and huge levels of immigrants coming in. I mean, the UK has been colonised. It's costing too much money. The UK has been colonised by immigrants, really, hasn't it? I mean, the population of the UK was 58 million in 2020, now it's 70 million. That's 12 million people."
"The migrants are in the UK 'because we had a massive shortage of people to work in the care sector'. Then another lot of migrants pay visa fees, health surcharge as well as tax and National Insurance contributions. What does [Sir Jim] mean by 'They are costing too much money'?"
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, founder of INEOS and part owner of Manchester United, said the UK has been colonised by immigrants and warned of social and economic challenges. He cited population growth from 58 million in 2020 to about 70 million and argued that an economy with nine million people on benefits cannot sustain large-scale immigration. Business figures Duncan Bannatyne and Kelvin McKenzie voiced agreement and support. University professor Dr Kehinde Ross countered that migrants filled care-sector shortages and pay visa fees, health surcharges, taxes and National Insurance. Bannatyne questioned costs of recent arrivals, and Sir Keir Starmer called the comments offensive and wrong.
