But China's plans for the mega embassy' has sparked fears from local residents, human rights groups, and officials over concerns about national security and transparency."
Approval for China's planned super-embassy at Royal Mint Court in central London has been delayed twice, with housing secretary Steve Reed setting a new deadline of October 10. The site was purchased by China for 255m in 2018 and sits next to the Tower of London. Concerns have been raised by local residents, human rights groups, the Metropolitan Police and Tower Hamlets Council about national security, transparency, foreign interference and diplomatic overreach. Committee chairman Matt Western warned of eavesdropping and sabotage risks because of proximity to fibre-optic cables, data centres and telecoms exchanges serving Canary Wharf and the City.
