Daughter of Holocaust survivor plans to be arrested in support of Palestine Action
"I just feel so shocked by our Labour Government doing this and I think it's time to really step up. I think it's also important that people know that Israel does not equate with Judaism. It has got nothing to do with Judaism. It is a political philosophy of Zionism and a nation-state. It has absolutely nothing to do with my identification as a Jew."
"It is just taken that all Jews support Zionism and Israel. That is absolutely not the case. I think it's important for Jewish people like me to speak out because there is also a real rise in antisemitism I think it's important that people know many Jews don't support what is going on today."
"I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action and hold the signs aloft."
Carolyn Gelenter, a 67-year-old Jewish Londoner and daughter of a Polish Holocaust survivor, plans to join over 1,000 protesters in Parliament Square and risk arrest to support Palestine Action. She intends to hold signs and write "I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action" as a public statement. The group's proscription in July, after damage to two Voyager planes at an RAF base, prompted her action. Gelenter is not a member of Palestine Action and supports the right to non-violent protest. She describes the ban as an erosion of democratic rights and free speech and warns of rising authoritarianism. She rejects equating Israel with Judaism, calling Zionism a political philosophy and nation-state separate from her Jewish identity, and emphasizes that many Jews do not support current Israeli actions. The Met Police says it can arrest anyone showing support for the banned group, while campaigners have urged officers not to detain sign-holders after some forces declined arrests.
