Council staff warned 'join union' after Reform win
Briefly

Labour representatives at Hyndburn Council are encouraging staff to join unions after Reform UK gained control, amid concerns over potential rollbacks of flexible working and DEI initiatives. Following Nigel Farage's controversial remarks targeting home-workers and DEI officers, Labour spokespeople criticized the agenda as detrimental to employees' rights. While Reform UK’s leadership argues against DEI as discriminatory, union representatives highlight the party's past votes against worker protections and warn that Reform seeks to divide the workforce. The tension signals an impending clash over labor rights and diversity policies in local governance.
Nigel Farage has made it clear the sort of changes he wants Reform-led councils to make, saying 'Work from home? Forget it. If you are a DEI officer, I suggest you look for another job'.
It's outrageous that immediately they're vowing to take away family-friendly and flexible working practices, as well as equality, diversity and inclusion initiatives.
A few weeks ago, Reform MPs voted against banning exploitative zero-hours contracts. They voted against day-one access to sick pay.
DEI, by its nature, is discriminatory and prejudiced. Reform UK will ensure that hiring practices are based solely on performance and merit—not on the colour of your skin or your personal agenda.
