A recent report from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) criticizes senior leaders in NHS England and the Department of Health for their complacency and insufficient drive to implement needed health service reforms. The PAC, after questioning key civil servants, expressed concern that officials lack the energy and urgency necessary for transformative change during a critical period for the NHS. Chair Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown highlighted systemic issues within the NHS and the risk of squandering opportunities to modernize healthcare services, emphasizing that mere incremental changes are inadequate.
Given the position of the NHS, forcing this committee to wade through treacle by mouthing the same platitudes of incremental change is simply not going to cut it.
The scale of government's ambitions is great but senior officials do not seem to have ideas, or the drive, to match the level of change required.
