The National Audit Office reported that outstanding debt from Carer's Allowance overpayments increased to over 250 million last year, revealing significant systemic issues.
According to Carers UK, the large amount of outstanding debt is "further evidence of a broken system that is failing unpaid carers, leaving them in financial hardship."
The NAO noted that 58% of new overpayment cases last year were from claimants who unknowingly exceeded the earning limit, emphasizing deficiencies in the Department for Work and Pensions' management.
Criticism has been directed at the DWP for failing to effectively prevent overpayments despite having systems that should flag when claimants earn too much.
