Campaigners call for tobacco windfall tax and yearly surcharges on lethal trade'
Briefly

Doctors, public health experts and cancer campaigners are urging Rachel Reeves to impose substantial financial penalties on tobacco firms, including a windfall tax, to fund smoking cessation initiatives.
We propose a one-off surcharge of £74 million and an annual levy of £700 million on tobacco industry's profits, as the firms profit immensely from selling lethal products.
Hazel Cheeseman of ASH stated that big tobacco generates obscene profits while causing the deaths of 76,000 people a year in the UK—it’s time financial penalties are enforced.
The proposed measures would involve capping profits tobacco companies can make while maintaining retail cigarette prices through additional taxation, to fund services aiding smokers in quitting.
