Cabinet Office looking into Labour Together claims, says minister
""looking at the facts""
""investigate the sourcing, funding and origins""
""in the process of undertaking a detailed internal review of the project""
""With its close and widely known links to the heart of government, serious questions must be answered about who was aware of these actions, including whether senior figures around the prime minister knew.""
The Cabinet Office will look at facts surrounding Labour Together after allegations that the group commissioned a report probing journalists' backgrounds. Labour Together paid APCO Worldwide at least £30,000 to investigate the sourcing, funding and origins of a Sunday Times story about undeclared think-tank donations before the 2024 general election. APCO Worldwide is conducting a detailed internal review of the project. Tory figures described the behaviour as contempt for the free press and called for suspension of Labour's links with Labour Together. The SNP demanded the sacking of Josh Simons over the report named "Operation Cannon". APCO Worldwide went beyond its contract by including unnecessary information on a Sunday Times journalist, and that information was removed before the report was passed to GCHQ. Earlier claims that the commission aimed to investigate journalists were rejected and the stated purpose was to look into a suspected illegal hack.
