On the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine, British policy has been criticized for its contradictions and inflexibility. While there was a strong condemnation of Russia's actions globally, the UK ruled out peace negotiations and NATO involvement, failing to adapt to the realities of the ongoing conflict. Several international actors proposed peace initiatives, indicating a willingness to mediate, but Britain maintained its position that peace could only come with a full Ukrainian victory. This has resulted in Britain becoming increasingly sidelined in diplomatic efforts surrounding the conflict.
The British response was muddled from the start. It recognized that Ukraine could not resist the Russian attack indefinitely, but ruled out peace negotiations.
Most of the world's governments agreed: by 141 votes to five, the UN general assembly condemned Russia's aggression and demanded the withdrawal of its troops.
