The Home Office is shifting its asylum accommodation strategy from expensive hotels to 800 new sites, primarily disused care homes and student housing. This change aims to reduce a daily bill that has ballooned to £8 million and to cut annual asylum support costs, which reached approximately £4.7 billion in 2023, with £3.1 billion attributed solely to hotel stays.
Despite previous efforts to utilize mass accommodation sites like military bases and barges, the Home Office acknowledged at a public accounts committee meeting that these solutions have underperformed, leading to a continued reliance on hotels, which cost around £150 per night.
