West End defies retail slump as Christmas shoppers flock to Oxford Street
"Central London's shopping districts have seen a surge in visitors this Christmas, defying the dismal retail figures gripping the rest of the country. The capital's West End recorded a 9 per cent rise in shoppers during the week leading up to Black Friday compared with last year, according to the New West End Company. The festive rush continued through the discount bonanza itself, with numbers up 4.1 per cent, before climbing again by 6.2 per cent the following week."
"Special events including a car-free Regent Street and live entertainment on Oxford Street drew particularly large crowds on the weekend of December 6 and 7. The New West End Company hailed the figures as proof of "real momentum" in the capitala stark contrast to official data showing retail sales dropped unexpectedly across Britain in November. Black Friday, imported from America, has become a cornerstone of the British shopping calendar and signals the start of the Christmas spending spree for millions."
Central London's shopping districts recorded notable increases in visitor numbers over the Black Friday period and into early December. The West End saw a 9% rise in shoppers in the week before Black Friday, a 4.1% increase during Black Friday and a further 6.2% the following week. Special events, including a car-free Regent Street and live entertainment on Oxford Street, produced particularly large crowds. Regent Street's car-free day produced a 33.7% jump, while Oxford Street live performances drove a 25.1% increase. Retailers reported strong weekend traffic as shoppers combined shopping, dining and festive activities. These gains contrasted with an unexpected nationwide drop in retail sales in November.
