Between April 1 and 18, over 80,000 Afghans returned from Pakistan to Afghanistan following the expiration of a voluntary return deadline. This is part of a significant initiative to repatriate illegal foreign residents in Pakistan, resulting in nearly 904,000 Afghan returnees since October 2023. The UN refugee agency has raised alarms regarding the escalating humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, emphasizing that many returning individuals are facing dire conditions. The UNHCR has urgently requested €62.5 million to aid those returning amid these challenging circumstances.

In April alone, more than 251,000 Afghans returned from Iran and Pakistan, including over 96,000 deportations.
Since October 2023, nearly 904,000 Afghans have been repatriated as part of a wider effort launched to remove foreigners living illegally in Pakistan.
The UNHCR is urgently appealing for €62.5 million to support those returning under increasingly difficult conditions.
