"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging."
"The leader of a major railway union posed with a Communist flag and was pictured alongside people singing pro-Russia chants on a visit to occupied Ukraine, it has emerged. The general secretary of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), Eddie Dempsey, travelled to the Donbas region of Ukraine in 2015, one year after it had been invaded by Russia."
The Independent solicits donations to fund on-the-ground journalism and to keep reporting free for all, citing investigative work and a documentary spotlighting American women fighting for reproductive rights. The report describes RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey travelling to the Donbas region in 2015, where footage showed him holding a red Communist Party flag and standing by a Lenin statue amid pro-Russia chants. The trip was organised by the Anti-Fascist Forum. An RMT spokesperson said the visit formed part of a humanitarian convoy motivated by the 2014 House of Trade Unions fire that killed 42 people, and denied any support by Dempsey for Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
