Two people, a 66-year-old man and 64-year-old woman who were a married couple from the United Kingdom, got into difficulty in the water at Shellharbour Beach in Shell Cove, south of Sydney, at 11am on Wednesday. Local bystanders immediately responded and pulled both individuals from the water. Despite rescue efforts by community members, both people died. Police Inspector Luke Geradts praised the bystanders as upstanding community members who gave the couple the best possible chance. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office confirmed they are supporting the family and coordinating with local authorities.
